Mind Body Connection

Have you ever heard of the placebo effect? This is where a perceived medication/remedy induces a response in a participant that the intervention is working to heal their body and reduce symptoms. There is in fact no medical reason for a reduction in symptoms, “medications” given are devoid of medicinal ingredients. What else is at work here?

The placebo effect neatly demonstrates the powerful connection between the mind and the body. Simply by believing one’s body is healing, this begins to happen. You can harness this power of mind-healing without deception by practicing the following three-step prescription.

Belief

The body and mind are in constant communication. You know of the pathways that tell your body to move, breathe, remain still, sleep. But this is a two way communication – as much as the brain tells the body to move, the body provides feedback to the brain. What’s more, you can mobilize certain energies (muscle movements is a practical and obvious one) by focusing on it. Part of this focus is believing that this pathway exists, and that you can harness the power of it. Concentrate on this flow of two-way communication.

Clearing Space

Part of being able to concentrate on the flow of two-way communication is clearing space for the mind and body to “think” about healing. If you have a lot of clutter in your life – negative relationships weighing you down, stress from your job or home life, anxiety and depression caused by negative energy in your environment – you won’t have the space to even begin to think about getting well. Consciously try to clear your life of the things that are weighing you down. What can you do to reach for more balance, peace, happiness and positive energy? Only do what feeds you, only be with people who strengthen you.

Meditation

Making space in your life for positive energy also means giving more time for you. You need adequate time to rest and reset on a regular basis, but especially so if you are in need of healing. Fill your extra time, which you consciously carve into your life, through meditation. It doesn’t have to be a formal process. Just find time in your day, every day, to just breathe. While you are “just breathing” listen to your body. Try to directly establish that relationship with your body, where you are aware of the way you feel at any given moment.

With a commitment to using your mind to its full healing potential, clearing the space for this nurturance to take place and giving yourself the chance to listen in to what your body is saying you can harness a positive mind-body connection.
